Dorothy W. Sorensen Painting Award
Dorothy Wheaton Sorensen was a Cadillac businesswoman, and owner of Reed & Wheaton Jewelers, for over 60 years. She graduated as an art teacher at Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in 1923 and was inspired by a grand tour of Europe in 1925. Her serious painting began around 1960, and over the ensuing 42 years she painted hundreds of canvases: landscapes and architecture, en plein air and from photographs, boats and ships, Cadillac scenes, still lifes, and many portraits.
She worked predominantly in oils and acrylics. She was awarded the mayor’s award at the art fair in the mid 1990’s.
Available for any Cadillac area artist over the age of 30
who produces representational works in oil or acrylic paint. Awards will be given at the annual Phyllis Olson Juried Art Fair.

Available for tuition for an art class or art supplies
Report of expenditures to be provided by winner to UNA within 60 days of receipt of award
Selection Criteria
Use of color, accuracy to reality, technique, perspective, and charm
