What is reader’s theatre?
Reader’s theatre is performance of the voice. The actors usually tell the story without the benefit of costumes, props, sets, movement or memorized lines. It became popular during and after World War II when people had limited resources to produce regular plays. Originally done by actors dressed in black sitting on stools, there are no rules.
Performances are usually presented in a more intimate setting without the requirements of a stage, can be taken “on the road” to bookstores, libraries, senior living centers, restaurants etc.
The readers and the audience can concentrate on the story being told, and costumes, props, sets, and lighting are not needed.
